An eight-year-old girl has been caught trying to smoke marijuana in a school bathroom in Ohio.
The child was found trying to light the cannabis by a school employee last Wednesday at Pataskala Elementary School.
After being found out the schoolgirl threw some of the drugs into a toilet and some in a trashcan, where police later recovered it from.
The school suspended the girl for 10 days – since reduced to three days – and are trying to work out how she got hold of the marijuana in the first place.
The girl did not actually inhale any of the marijuana as she had tried to light the plastic bag it was contained in, rather than the drugs, the Newark Advocate reported.
Pataskala police chief Bruce Brooks said: ‘The good thing is she didn’t know how to [smoke]. She lit the baggie.’
The child’s family told ABC6 that they believe another girl gave her the cannabis and lighter on the school bus.
Police and school officials plan to review surveillance footage from on board the bus.
Anyone found to have supplied the girl with the cannabis could be charged with endangering children.
It is illegal to possess or supply marijuana in Ohio, although first offences involving small amounts of the drug are usually only punished with a $150 fine. The girl will not face punishment because of her age.
